Game-Based Learning for AAC: ELD-AAC Advances Expressive Skills for AAC Users

ELD-AAC Advances Expressive Skills for AAC Users

About the Project

ELD-AAC is an innovative game-based software application designed to advance communication skills for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users.

Developed by distinguished speech-language pathologist Susan Berkowitz, who brings over 40 years of experience helping AAC users, the curriculum of ELD-AAC leverages principles of scaffolded learning and gamification to engage students in interactive, game-based activities focused on building grammar, sentence construction, and expressive language abilities.

The initial ELD-AAC program includes a robust suite of 13 digital learning activities targeting core communication skills, providing over 400 opportunities to practice constructing phrases and sentences. Key features include dynamic communication boards, instant feedback for students, and multi-profile tracking of learner analytics to inform data-driven education.

As shown in the follwing image, we helped Susan incorporate a comprehensive analytics system for ELD-AAC, which allows each student to log in using their own specific ID, and tracks each student's performance data individually, to allow the educator or the institution the flexibility to use a limited amount of devices for a lot of students. The advanced analytics also allows the students to understand each student's struggles and weaknesses in the curriculum.

ELD-AAC is research-driven, integrating evidence-based instructional design strategies and proven therapy techniques to accelerate outcomes. Initial trials conducted in clinics and classrooms around the country have demonstrated significant improvements in communication benchmarks like Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) and reduced plateauing for early elementary aged participants.

This EdTech Solution again is another example of how we help clients in the special education industry build innovative EdTech solutions using gamification technology to genuinely help build bridges for learners with special needs. We have helped the client design, develop, and distribute this software to AAC providers across the states. And if this inspires you to create an EdTech solution with us, contact us today for a free consultation to answer all your questions and concerns.
